Twenty-six full boarders in Westwood camped on the Upper
during Saturday night and despite the inclement conditions, Mrs Mainwaring’s
BBQ went down a storm, as did the enormous bonfire thanks to the groundsmen, Mr
Hollywell and Mr Webb; this offered a chance to toast marshmallows. The
tents had fortunately gone up in the dry after careful Met Office forecast
watching in the build-up. Special mention to Wilf , Rachel,
Dario, Xande and Henry who showed real proficiency when
it came to tent building. After the BBQ, various staff and pupils enjoyed a
competitive game of rounders umpired by Mrs Curtis and Miss Wright in tricky
conditions. Some pupils managed to keep chatting quietly until midnight
and enjoyed feasts! Thanks to Miss Verdier who gamely camped out, as did the
Curtis family and Rose Mainwaring.
The sun came out on Sunday and allowed all the campers to
dry out before plunging into the cold water at Cardiff International White
Water centre for some high ropes and rafting. Pupils shrieked with joy
and occasionally out of fear when tackling these challenges under warm skies!
The trip home was somewhat truncated due to road works on the M4 and camp
equipment was still being sorted past 8:30 pm in Westwood. Still have to
tidy away some kit and the tents!! A thoroughly enjoyable weekend!
Special thank you to catering for our provisions, all the
staff, their spouses and children mentioned and to Mr Edgell who supported
Sunday’s trip magnificently.
